Yes, just copy the maildirectory and it will work without a problem. Some people using mail.app might need to remove the INBOX from their IMAP Path Prefix from the account setup.

I'm ready to move from a server running Courier to another server running Dovecot. Can I just copy all the old mail to the new server and start up Dovecot? Will Dovecot automatically create the indexes and stuff that it needs? Do the names of the actual mail files matter?

Well here's the answer to my own question: How do I build apache for 64-bit server, Please suggest - hp.com

It looks like, and I was doubting about it anyway, one more shell variable was missing: export CPPFLAGS="-arch x86_64"

When I exported that variable before configuring Apache; the resulting binary has finally turned out 64 bits :)

Thanks!

Hello,
I'm trying to compile the Apache using the guidelines in "Compiling Apache in 64 bits mode on Leopard" section of this website and using the DIYMacServer config.layout.

But, though I apply each direction (including setting the CFLAG to "-arch x86_64"), I still cannot get a "64-bit" Apache binary but rather just a normal (32-bit) binary (as seen from the Activity Manager)

64-bit MySQL compilation on the same machine worked out fine (i.e. mysqld shows up as 64-bit on Activity Manager)

So I wonder what I might be missing...
Thanks.

Hi Brian, welcome.

I understand our problem, one of the first things when starting this myself was to ditch Cyrus as it is one of the lesser ones. I first used Courier which was a lot easier setup. I wish I could help you but I'm not very knowledgeable on the server setup. Never really used it.

There are some caveats if you want to use the instructions here. OS X Server uses local user accounts, our setup uses virtual users that only exist in a database and are not able to login to OS X. Also the config therefore is different from OS X Server. The location of the mailboxes is also different. OS X Server stores everything in the users home directory and here we put everything in single place.

Another difference you should be aware of, I think, is that the server admin tools of both versions are not compatible as they are both targeted for different products: Cyrus vs Dovecot. I don't think you could use the admin tools for Snow Leopard on Leopard on a G5 models.

The easiest solution would be to upgrade to the intel platform, which could be expensive. Perhaps you could consider a Mac mini with OS X Server? They perform admirably and might even be a suitable replacement for a G5 server.

Another option would be to ditch the apple mailserver and switch over to our setup but that might be tricky and would require some time in testing and trying. I would be willing to assist in trying to get this working if you think you need any help.

Despite the fact that my issues concern X Server and that's not primarily what this site is about, I'm still hoping for the counsel of the wise (as opposed to any specific q or a).

I've a modest OSX server farm - four hosts, half on Snow Leopard and half (G5s) on Leopard.

I've come to loathe Cyrus with a passion I normally reserve for religion and politics, and glad Apple abandoned it, and would like to rebuild the 10.5.x Server systems to use Dovecot.

Beyond that, I'd like to rebuild the Leopard systems to be as close to identical to the SL systems as is feasible, but give my aforementioned hatred for Cyrus, mail services seem a good place to start.

My concerns are my merely moderate expertise, not breaking Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, or any of the other training wheels that my less savvy staff use, and ending up with something that's more uniform, more elegant, and more reliable than the not-too-bad mishmash I've currently got. Since X Server's mailserver has always been the sharpest rock in my boot, I figure I'll start there.

Any advice?

Well I have to use 5.1.42 version because of the compatibility reasons.

I had downloaded it at MySQL.com archives as .tar.gz file and upon your remark I have re-downloaded it, this time as .zip file and after that, it compiled perfectly at the make stage.

Clearly enough, it was a corrupted source file as you have guessed.

I try to compile MySQL 5.1.42 using the configuration options provided for Intel. The configuration works fine but at the make stage, it gives the following error:

My system: MAC OS X 10.5.8 XCode 3.1 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

For courier-auth set DEBUG_LOGIN=0

I can see how to increase the log level in postfix for specific domains, but not how to limit it, generally. I have the old (courier+postfix) setup.

Sorry missed the roundcube angle. I've still got this as SSL. What it means is that roundcube makes a secure connection from the apache server (running php) to the imap server. This has nothing to do with HTTP or HTTPS, that is between apache and the browser. I only have IMAP over SSL as available option I've disabled normal van IMAP out of paranoia ;-).

I've tested 3.9.0 together with Stevan (from the Dspam project) but due to time constraints I've never been able to properly write down the instructions. If you send me an email to info @ this domain I will send you my notes to test it yourself.

I'm have postfix + dovecot + MySQL setup on my Mac w/ Snow Leopard (64 bit) and used your tutorial to get me going. Though everything works it only runs for a short time before I can't connect to send mail and I see this error:

hi richard and all followers on that topic!

i followed for a long time the dspam project, but never got around trying to implement it in any real world setup - so consider me new on that one.

in the past, i setup a few OS X Servers (the real ones) and always stuck to the old postfix/amavisd-new mantra. on a few machines the users rise every month, the total processed mails along with them and a faster solution for the time consuming analyzing of spam would be welcome - so i remembered about DSPAM.

now it seems to be the right time to get into it, with this new freshly released version. wouldn't it be a good time if you could retry your compilings and post the results, please?

i'm in the process of setting up my own server (got me a Mac mini Server :-) and this marks the time and opportunity to switch to a new setup with DPSAM. happily i would provide my time for testing, whenever the needed instructions for compiling and initial setup could be provided.

hopefully we could get that thing up & running nicely, along postfix, dovecot & clamav.
thx.

You could have also used the "lanchctl unload" feature to remove the files from the startu-sequence. But your method works as well, but a bit crude...

I think I fixed it. I also had 2 other org.apache.httpd.plist files (that I had earlier renamed to org.apache.httpd-default.plist). Anyway, I deleted all the org.apache.httpd.plist files from the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ directory (sudo rm) after making backups of the files to another location. After reboot, no more throttling and respawning! Apparently launchctl does not care about the name of the .plist file--it reads it anyway. Removing the file seems to work.

I did some more poking around (locate org.apache.httpd in terminal) and found a copy in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist. I renamed the file and rebooted, but apache (in usr/sbin) is still trying to restart every 10 seconds. I also looked at the file contents and I find this:
<key>Disabled</key>
<true/>

It looks like this is disabled. Why does it continue to try and start?
