We weren’t satisfied by the default Apache installation with which Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) comes, we wanted our own installation which we can update when we want and that was not depended on or affected by Apple’s Security Updates. The compilation and installation of Apache is relatively simple. Download the latest source from apache.org.

Before you start you might want to turn of the default Apache installation that might be running on your Mac. To make sure that it isn’t running open “System Preferences” and open the “Sharing Preference” pane and to stop Apache by unchecking “Personal Web Sharing”.

Please note that since Lion there is no longer a difference between 32 bits and 64 bits compilation as Lion is now only able to run on 64 bits machines.
