Mac OS X update 10.6.5 and Security Update 2010-007

I’ve installed the updates on all my test machines running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and Leopard 10.5.8 and I’ve noticed the following problems:

on Leopard

On Leopard there are the small known issues with postfix, replacing our binary and shutting don remote conntections. To correct it perform the following steps after the updates:

Re-install postfix by going into your latest source directory you’ve used the last time and run

sudo make install

Next, comment out or delete the following line from ‘/etc/postfix/‘:

inet_interfaces = localhost

Restart postfix (reloading config does not work) with:

sudo postfix stop

Postfix should restart automatically (if not run sudo postfix start).

Snow Leopard

Can’t detect any postfix problems on Snow Leopard. If you can confirm this please leave a comment.

To read more on the updates read the Apple Knowledge Base article on this update.

PS. Yes I know, I’m working on relocating postfix to another location so it won’t happen again. But lack of time is hampering progress….

Dovecot updated to 2.0.7

A new version of Dovecot has been released, I’ve installed it on my test servers without a problem. Check the improvements and decide if you want to upgrade.

  • master: default_process_limit wasn’t actually used anywhere, rather the default was unlimited. Now that it is enforced, you might notice that the default limit is too low and you need to increase it. Dovecot logs a warning when this happens.
  • mail-log plugin: Log mailbox name as virtual name rather than physical name (e.g. namespace prefix is included in the name)
  • doveadm dump: Added imapzlib type to uncompress IMAP’s COMPRESS DEFLATE I/O traffic (e.g. from rawlog).
  • IMAP: Fixed LIST-STATUS when listing subscriptions with subscriptions=no namespaces.
  • IMAP: Fixed SELECT QRESYNC not to crash on mailbox close if a lot of changes were being sent.
  • quota: Don’t count virtual mailboxes in quota
  • doveadm expunge didn’t always actually do the physical expunging
  • Fixed some index reading optimizations introduced by v2.0.5.
  • LMTP proxying fixes

MySQL released 5.1.52

MySQL released version 5.1.52, this is a bug fix release which also includes some security fixes and it is up to you if you want to upgrade. Check all the fixes and changes that are listed on the release notes to see what issues are resolved and if you are affected. Most of them are about InnoDB engine.

I’ve compiled it and did some tests on my servers and it worked without any problems.

Read the documentation on how to ugrade MySQL.

Apple discontinues XServe

I’ve always looked at the XServe in awe. They where the most beautiful designed rack servers I had ever seen, and not only on the outside. I dreamed of once owning my own, but alas hat i not going to happen anymore. Apple just announced that they are discontinuing the model. Everybody wanting to run a server will have to choose a Mac Pro or Mini for running OS X server.

I think it’s a pity that this is happening, I hope this does not mean that in a few years we won’t have a OS X server version. As that is still the best solution for running an OS X server. I’m only showing the cheap alternative here.
